June 18, 2013 – Dog Fancy, the world’s most widely read dog magazine, has awarded Steamboat Springs, Colo., the title of DogTown USA 2013. The publication’s annual award is given in recognition of America’s best city for dogs and their owners.
Every year Dog Fancy asks readers to nominate America’s most dog-friendly cities. The editors then research each city and name the winner based on the presence of dog-friendly activities, restaurants, businesses, dog parks, medical specialists, pro-dog legislation, and other criteria. This year Steamboat Springs rose to the top of an impressive crop of dog-friendly cities.
“Famous as an international ski resort, Steamboat Springs is a mile-high mecca for dogs and their owners, embracing a love for canines in daily life and activities year-round,’’ says Ernie Slone, editor of Dog Fancy magazine and DogChannel.com. “At the town’s century-old winter carnival, dogs join in the fun with the annual Dog Dash, where dogs pull kids on sleds through the snow down Main Street. In summer at the River Dog Races dogs compete for the longest river jump and best trick.’’
Dog Fancy named the following regional winning cities:
- Southwest: Glendale, Az.
- Northwest: Seattle
- Northeast: Annapolis, Md.
- Southeast: Eureka Springs, Ark.
Each winning city will be profiled in the September issue of Dog Fancy, available on newsstands July 23, 2013.
In an award ceremony scheduled for Aug. 3, 2013, in Steamboat Springs, Slone will present the city a check for $5,000, which will be donated to Routt County Humane Society, their designated local dog charity.
“With 3,000 dogs in a city of 12,000 people, there is lots of animal love to go around, and many places to share it,” notes Slone. “There are hundreds of miles of dog-friendly trails, including the 7-mile Yampa River Core Trail, a paved path lined by parks that winds through the city along the river.”
Adds Slone, “This town is so dog friendly that the local car wash also offers a dog wash for your pooch!’’
